While we’re just poking fun about the date when Nala began his career at HC&S FCU on this ancient scroll, it truly has been a long tenure for a special person. Nala started his 38 year journey at HC&S, later to be named Valley Isle Community FCU back in 1974 during some highs (mortgage rates 9.96%) and lows (gasoline 76 cents per gallon). President Richard Nixon found time despite his Watergate ordeals to impose a 55 MPH speed limit in an attempt to conserve during the gasoline crisis and rationing. The World Trade Center opened in New York on April 5, 1974 and on April 3, a record number of 148 tornadoes struck some mainland states in a single day. (For which most of the debris drifted across the Pacific and landed in Nala’s office and remains there to this day). Emo Rubik invented the Rubik’s Cube in ’74 and Nala’s obsession in attempting to unravel it not only contributed to weeks upon months of deficient productivity and borderline lunacy, but as one ophthalmologist confirmed: “It was the rapid whirling of little squares of various color that tweaked his senses and caused him to succumb to color blindness.” On April 3rd, Hank Aaron became the all-time home run leader with his 715th, surpassing Nala’s drinking buddy Babe Ruth. Nala received his nickname one day as he and his cousins had nothing better to do than sit around and try to recite their names in reverse. His was so simple and well received that it stuck. How fitting…as the true meaning of Nala is “gift”, “nice” or “friendly”.
Over the course of his thirty eight years, assets have grown at the Credit Union from $4.8 million in 1974 to nearly $105 million today and membership has risen from 2,556 to an amazing 12,500. The number of friends and colleagues he has impacted over this time is impossible to determine, but what we do know is that he is a highly esteemed person who has consistently displayed his loyalty to VICFCU, as well as a passionate concern for the employees and members of this fine institution, which he has orchestrated to be what it is today. You will be missed but we are grateful that you will make plenty visits Nala. Thank you! Best Wishes to you and Carol.
